Cellist Poppy Walshaw is active as a soloist, chamber musician, and continuo player on historical instruments. She works with many leading ensembles such as the English Baroque Soloists, English Concert, Academy of Ancient Music, Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, Orchestre Révolutionnaire et Romantique, and Arcangelo. Poppy has performed as continuo cellist for Sir John Eliot Gardiner on many occasions including for the English Baroque Soloists on an extensive European tour.
Chamber music recordings include Hummel & Schubert quintets for Chandos, and Haydn Trios, with renowned violinist Simon Standage. Her first solo recording of Geminiani will be released early in 2023 along with Giordani cello duets, as part of a second Irlandiani chamber CD.
Recent concerto performances have included live broadcasts on Danish and Polish Radio with leading Polish ensemble Arte dei Suonatori, and with Fiori Musicali, with whom she has also played continuo for many years. Other recent performances include as principal for Schubert with the Hanover Band, guest principal with the Instruments of Time and Truth and with Armonico Consort, and as continuo cellist for Rachel Podger's Brecon Baroque at the Wigmore Hall.
Poppy read Natural Sciences and Music at Cambridge University then studied with Alexander Baillie in Bremen, Germany, and at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama with Alison McGillivray and Louise Hopkins. She has taught the Alexander Technique since 2012, including for Cambridge University Music Faculty, and is currently training as a Feldenkrais practitioner.
